The Floods of 1953

These resources look at the floods that happened along the East Coast on January 31st in 1953. Communities along the coast were badly affected from Scotland to the south coast but as the storm that caused the flooding moved southward the storm surge was amplified.

Canvey island, Harwich and Jaywick were all badly affected with widespread devastation and 58 deaths in Canvey, 35 in Jaywick and eight in Harwich.

This resource has been prepared ahead of the 70th anniversary in 2023 It was commissioned by the Essex Record Office and was created by Pippa Smith of Handling the Past  http://handlingthepast.co.uk/ working with the support of a range of partners.

There are three different pack with each one tailored for one of three areas, Canvey Island, Harwich and Dovercourt or Jaywick. The packs contain three PowerPoints and Teachers Notes with background to the events of 31st January 1953, along with some suggestions for class activities linked to the PowerPoints. Activities have also been provided by the Environment Agency.
