Archival services

We have the expertise you need to manage all kinds of archiving tasks, from sorting individual elements to running your entire archive.

• Enquiry handling service – we will answer genealogical and local history enquiries, Freedom of Information enquiries, Data Protection enquiries and Subject Access Requests
• Surveying – we will assess records within an organisation, or conduct a thematic survey of holdings across a number of organisations or a geographical area
• Appraising – we will devise retention schedules, identify records for destruction and select records for permanent retention
• Cataloguing – we will provide detailed catalogues to ISAD(G) standard of records either in paper format or in an electronic catalogue

Subscription Packages

We also have a range of subscription packages available to you, or we can tailor a bespoke package to suit your specific needs.

We offer three packages, providing a range of skills and services. Resources can be added to create a bespoke package which enhances and extends the service for the benefit of the authority’s community.

Gold Package

• Archivist/local studies librarian on site for 1 day per week
• Access to ERO’s Genealogical and Historical search service
• Access to Essex Archives Online, our online catalogue, on site 1 day per week
• Enquiry handling at ERO including FOI and Data Protection Act and copyright
• 1 outreach activity per year
• Handling accessions while on site for half day per month
• Access to ERO’s Reprographics service
• On site access to non-digital records held by ERO under supervision of archivist
• Cataloguing of records on Essex Archives Online
• Maintenance of statistics including Cipfa return
• Includes an Archival Conservation and Bookbinding subscription package
• Advice on accreditation and grant applications
• Training for volunteers and staff
• Liaison with local Family History Society and other heritage bodies

Silver Package

• Archivist/local studies librarian on site for 1 day per week
• Access to ERO’s Genealogical and Historical search service
• Access to Essex Archives Online, our online catalogue, on site 1 day per week
• Enquiry handling at ERO excluding FOI and Data Protection Act
• 1 outreach activity per year
• Handling accessions on site for half day per month
• Access to ERO’s Reprographics service

Bronze Package

• Archivist/local studies librarian on site for 1 day per week
• Access to ERO’s Genealogical and Historical search service
• Access to Essex Archives Online, our online catalogue, on site 1 day per week
• Enquiry handling service while on site only 1 day per week
