This talk from Dr Kathleen Chater will give us an overview of Black British history, from the Romans to the arrival of the SS Windrush in 1948. She will take us through several centuries of history, stopping off to tell us about some people you may have heard of, such as Olaudah Equiano and Mary Seacole, and several others you may have not. Kathleen is a writer, historian and genealogist who gained her doctorate in 2007 with her thesis on Black people in England and Wales during the British Slave Trade.

The Essex History Group meets at ERO for talks on varied historical subjects. There is no formal membership and all are welcome. Talks start at 10.30am, with refreshments before and after. Our lecture theatre is accessible to people in wheelchairs and has an induction loop.
