Description

This talk from Allison Foster of the Sainsbury’s archive will look at the development of Sainsbury’s branches in the Essex region, charting the change in shopping habits from counter service to large supermarkets with a special reference to how shopping for the festive feast has changed throughout the decades. Allison manages the Sainsbury Archive, now based at the Museum of London Docklands in Canary Wharf. The Sainsbury Archive collection includes a large number of documents and artefacts ranging from food preparation and testing equipment, to product packaging and staff uniforms. It is particularly strong in the areas of product packaging, advertising and retail stores, with a large collection of images of shops from the foundation of Sainsbury’s in 1869 to present day.

The Essex History Group meets at ERO for talks on varied historical subjects. There is no formal membership and all are welcome.

Talks start at 10.30am, with refreshments before and after. Our lecture theatre is accessible to people in wheelchairs and has an induction loop.
